Nikkor Lenses
Lens Abbreviations (What the jargon means)
AF-S (swm) Silent Wave Motor. This gives the lens a quick, ultra-quiet focusing system. This system works by converting travelling waves into rotational energy to focus the optics. The ultrasonic waves move in a spiral pattern inside the barrel with the motor positioned on top of the waves driving it from below.
D Distance information. D-type and G-type Nikkor lenses relay subject data to the camera distance information on most recent Nikon AF bodies. D-type lenses also have a manual aperture ring.
DX Digital format only, APS-C size sensor. These lenses are not compatible with 35mm bodies.
ED Extra-Low Dispersion. Designed to correct chromatic aberration to a greater degree than non ED versions. Chromatic aberration is when the white light passing through the lens is split up into its constituent wavelengths i.e. red green blue, and remains split when hitting the focal plane/sensor to give less sharp images. The ED glass does a good job and is worth the extra cost.
G Genisis. As D-series lenses without the manual aperture ring.
IF Internal Focusing. The focus mechanism is designed to work without the lens changing its outer dimensions.
VR Vibration Reduction. The latest upgrade offered for those that can afford it. A VR lens should allow you to shoot at much slower shutterspeeds and still get sharp results. Whether low light or long lens it is always an advantage.
